Small Press Sunday

So it is that time of years again, wedge between Small Business Saturday and Cyber-Monday I am once again encouraging everyone out there to jump online and support small and independent publishers in an effort to bring the joy of the written or spoken word to someone that you love.

This year I am going to highlight six selections that I think everybody needs to take a look at in the new year, they range from Science Fiction, to Literary, A guide to writing poetry to Comics and for a change of pace I’m even including a Concept Album (Yes, I said a concept album) by an amazing up and coming band. So let’s get to the recommendations.

strand

So after releasing his final volume in his “After the Storm” series earlier this year Don Chase jumped right back into  things with a new Series “Strand”. Don is an amazingly creative author with the ability to put a fresh twist on an old genre. Starting off a whole  new series for Don “Strand(Volume 1) The Antilles” was released in Oct. in paperback and eBook.

Parasite-Girls

For many an Independent author a single book represents years if not decades of work and struggle. Tory Gates is no exception with the release of “Parasite Girls” he has finally brought years’ worth of work to the public. An examination of culture, responsibility and friendship, this book questions how we look at art and the world. Available in all eBook formats.

glitter in the bloodHowever not maybe you have someone who has a more poetic bend to what they like to read. Maybe they have tried to write their own poetry and are frustrated by the results. The have the concepts but don’t know how to put them on the page, or maybe they just love the written word. Then Mindy Nettifee’s “Glitter in the Blood: A Poet’s Manifesto for Better, Braver Writing” is the choice you need to made. Mindy not only examines poetry and writing, from inspiration to execution, but she challenges her readers as both writers and people.

Kilroy

The latest from Angela Hunt of Hunt Press is “Kilroy” combining the culture of dark fantasy with the technology of Science Fiction; Angela weaves a tale of Kilroy, new head of the assassin’s guild in her attempts to avenge the mysterious death of her mentor and predecessor, while also facing her own past. With enemies with-in and with-out her own guild trying to destroy her all along the way.

Star Mage

While IDW Comics is not exactly a small press they are going to be distributing a creator owned Comic in the coming year called “Star Mage” created by writer J.C. De La Torre and artists Ray Dillon and Franco Cespedes it chronicles the story of a 14 years old boy named Darien as he discovers that not only is he not human, but that he is the instrumental to an ancient war between two mystic alien races.

A thousand year love storyMy final recommendation is a little out of the ordinary, as my focus has always been on writers and self/independent press, but in this case I am going to make an exception because telling a great story can happen in many different forms. Formerly a cover band ‘Best Day Ever’ is in the process of releasing their epic concept album “A Thousand Year Love Story”. Releasing it in chapters of two to three songs at a time they tell the story of Orion and Alhena as their love spans a millennium of history.

So that rounds out my recommendation of small and independent press for you to support for this holiday season, if you have a small/self-published/independent book or album that you would like to recommend please share the link in the comments below.
